Sweet treats, great books, author visits highlight event

by: TIMES PHOTO: JAIME VALDEZ - Debbie Burke, owner of Jan's Paperbacks in Aloha, invites the community to a grand re-opening party on Saturday night.Jan’s Paperbacks is celebrating the grand re-opening of its store by hosting a party featuring authors of all genres, a dessert bar and a Kobo Mini eReader giveaway.

The festivities will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at the store’s longtime location in Aloha at 18095 S.W. Tualatin Valley Highway.

The party will be an open house for all to enjoy.

All authors will be mingling with guests as well as signing copies of their books. Jan’s will also be raffling off a new Kobo Mini eReader to one guest: no purchase necessary, but must be present to win.

A complimentary dessert bar will also be available.

Confirmed authors include: T.J. Brown, historical fiction; Maggie Jaimeson, women’s romantic fiction and romantic suspense; Lars D.H. Hedbor, young adult historical fiction; Jenna Bayley-Burke, contemporary romance; Bryan Lee Gregory, fantasy; Anna Brentwood, romantic suspense; Brad Cameron, young adult fantasy; and Tonya Macalino, paranormal thriller.

Independently owned and operated, Jan’s Paperbacks has been a staple in the Aloha community for 32 years. In that time, the store has remained largely untouched.

The original shelving and layout had served the store well, but were ready for an update to keep up with the changing needs of the customers and literary trends. To achieve this goal, the store recently undertook the task of a complete store remodel.

The remodel included new paint for a crisp, clean and bright look along with a redesigned layout and new/rebuilt shelving. The new layout was achieved with repurposed shelving, purchased from an out-of-business bookstore, along with rebuilding 64 of the existing shelves into 18 new square bookshelves on wheels.

The work was completed at night while the store was closed and finished within two weeks. The new shelving and layout will allow for greater flexibility in hosting events at the store including book signings, readings and book groups.

Jan’s Paperbacks specializes in selling and trading paperback books in-store as well as selling new and eBooks through its online store at
