Music in Small Spaces, sponsored by the Beaverton Arts Commission, will present the Al-Andalus Ensemble on Saturday, July 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Beaverton City Library Auditorium, 12375 S.W. Fifth St.

This event is presented as a kick-off to the Beaverton International Celebration being held the following weekend, on Saturday, July 27, at the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District’s Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Center at Southwest 158th Avenue and Walker Road.

Led by oudist Tarik Banzi, the Al-Andalus Ensemble is internationally known for a creative fusion that “etches a fine line between the exquisite and raw, the passionate and powerful while treating the listener to a confluence of the best of the East and West,” according to an arts commission representative. These artists have toured Europe and the Americas with their art.

“Al-Andalus” refers to Spain from 711-1492 AD. Preserved and developed by the descendants of Muslim and Jewish refugees after the Reconquest, it is considered one of the longest continuous traditions of art music in the world.

Also on hand, the Arab Roots of Flamenco will provide an overview of flamenco from guitar and cante (singing) to baile (dance) and the relationship to Arabic music.

The basic compass and main branches of Flamenco are explored in Arab musical culture. CDs will be sold at the intermission. For more information about Al-Andalus, visit andalus.com.

“This is an incredible opportunity to enjoy music and dance steeped in history,” said Mayor Denny Doyle. “I encourage all music lovers to attend this special event, which is sure to awe and delight through the passion of Flamenco.”

Doors open at 2 p.m. for the 2:30 p.m. performance. Tickets are available at the door or online for $9. Free parking is available on either side of the Beaverton City Library.
