Community events honor Veterans Day tradition

Special programs and meals invite public to pay tribute to veterans

Families looking to honor veterans can participate in an array of community celebrations marking Veterans Day. Here are a few events close to home:

Watson Ave. The program includes patriotic tributes by the American Legion and guest speakers as well as musical performances. Following the ceremony, guests are invited to tour the many memorials honoring veterans at Beaverton’s Veterans Memorial Park across the street from the church.

Sherwood Veterans Day Ceremony — The city and Champoeg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invite the community to honor all veterans Monday at 11 a.m. at Sherwood High School Commons, 16956 S.W. All proceeds will go to the “Save the PT Boat Inc.” campaign. A restored World War II PT boat is on the Portland waterfront and now it needs a permanent home. The plan is to raise funds to build the PT 658 Heritage and Education Center. Learn more about the project at the event.

Washington County Veterans Day Ceremony — In honor of the 60 years that have passed since the signing of the Armistice, a tribute to veterans of the Korean War will take place during the Veterans Day Ceremony at the Washington County Fair Complex. Washington County posts of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, with support from Washington County’s Disability, Aging, and Veteran Services, sponsor the annual ceremony, which will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. (rain or shine) at the Veterans Gateway. The ceremony will begin with the presentation of the colors and end with the playing of “Taps” followed by a gun salute firing three volleys in the military tradition acknowledging that the deceased have been properly cared for. Speakers scheduled for this event include Washington County Board Chairman Andy Duyck and several local Korean War veterans. Families are encouraged to honor the service of the veterans of the “Forgotten War” as well as all veterans living and deceased. Refreshments at the event are provided by the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary.
