Adrienne Doman Calkins steps into the role left by head librarian Pam North, who retired last month after 18 years with the library.

For the past decade, Doman Calkins, 38, has worked as senior circulation supervisor of the Olympia Library, which is part of Washington’s expansive Timberland Regional Library system.

“I’m very excited,” Doman Calkins said of her new position. “From what I’ve heard, the staff is just amazing.

“The people are what make a place enjoyable.”

She officially began her duties on July 14.

At her Olympia job, Doman Calkins oversaw 23 employees for a library that is part of a five-county, 27-branch SUBMITTED PHOTO - The city of Sherwood has hired Adrienne Doman Calkins as its new library manager, replacing Pam North, who retired after 18 years with the Sherwood Public Library.

“Olympia is the busiest of the 27 branches,” she said, noting that the library has a total annual circulation of just under 900,000 items.

A 1999 graduate of the University of Oregon, where she received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, Doman Calkins later received a degree in book arts from Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland. She recently finished her master’s degree in library and information science from San Jose State University while still working full-time.

Although Doman Calkins said Olympia was a familiar place for her, she was anxious to get back to Oregon.

“I grew up in McMinnville — graduated from high school there,” she said, adding that she has family members in Lake Oswego.

Doman Calkins was hired following advice from a selection committee, which held a first round of interviews with the library applicants, and later a second round that produced three finalists, according to Kristen Switzer, Sherwood community services director.

Switzer said Doman Calkins was selected, among other attributes, for her experience and the fact she has passion and enthusiasm for libraries.

“She also has a great passion for mentoring and working with staff,” said Switzer. “She should be great.”

While in Washington, Doman Calkins said she fell in love with the mountains, and seven years ago became a mountain climber. Today, she lists Washington’s Mount Adams as her favorite volcano to scale and loves hiking in the Enchantments, a well-known backpacking destination.

She said she’s looking forward to her new chapter in life in the Sherwood community.

“The library itself is beautiful,” she said. “From what everyone has told me, the town supports the library.”

The mother of a 4-month-old boy, Gavin, Doman Calkins is married to Wendell Calkins.
