Sarah Jakubowski has until Aug. 6 to raise $20,000 on Kickstarter

Sarah Jakubowski is well known in the Sherwood and Tigard communities for coaching and choreographing high school dance teams, leading them to win many competitions, including a state championship.

Now she is expanding her horizons and opening her own studio, SMJ Performing Arts, in Sherwood in September and is asking the public to help by contributing to her business via Kickstarter.

Jakubowski, who was named Coach of the Year in 2010 for her division in Oregon and has spent the past two years as a teacher and director at Westside Dance Academy in Tigard, is compiling an experienced staff and plans to offer ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, women’s barre and Pilates classes, toddler-adult classes, acrobatics and piano.

“Through an online funding platform called Kickstarter, I am able to reach out to my friends, family and this amazing community to ask for assistance in getting my dreams and business off the ground,” Jakubowski said. “Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing deal in which I‘m required to set a fundraising goal and timeline. If I meet the pledge goal, I will receive the money donated to start my business.

“If I don’t reach the set fundraising goal, those who have pledged will not be charged, and I will also not receive any money. For each level of donation, my ‘backers’ will receive special rewards such as free classes, registration to an SMJ dance clinic, and so on.”

Jakubowski added, “I am extremely passionate in my love for teaching and whole-heartedly believe that I will bring a new level of dancing talent to my community of Sherwood. I am committed to giving my dancers a foundation in technique but also the confidence they need to pursue what they are truly passionate about through a loving and nurturing environment. "

She said SMJ Performing Arts will provide a wholesome, positive and financially stable business in the Sherwood community. After an in-depth review of her start-up expenses, Jakubowski set a fundraising goal of $20,000. She has until Wednesday, Aug. 6, to garner pledges to reach her goal.

“The start-up expenses include Marley floors, mirrors, ballet barres, piano for the studio, sound system, studio furnishings, signage and business administrative expenses," she said. "My plan is in place, now I just need (everyone’s) help to make it happen.”
