Sherwood blasts Putnam to remain unbeaten at 9-0

MILWAUKIE — To the Sherwood High School football team, it’s not something new.

But it sure is impressive.

The Bowmen wrapped up their third straight undefeated regular season by rolling to a 63-14 win over Rex Putnam in a Northwest Oregon Conference finale played Friday at Rex Putnam High School.

With the loss, Putnam finished the regular season with a league record of 4-3 and an overall mark of 4-5.

Sherwood, the NWOC champion, finished its regular season slate with a 7-0 record in league play and an overall mark of 9-0.

The Bowmen have now won 29 straight regular season games. They’re last loss in regular-season play was a 48-14 setback to Hillsboro in a game played Oct. 16, 2009.

Sherwood wasted little time in taking charge in their latest regular-season win.

Junior Mickey Schafer scored on a 6-yard run, senior Cristian Morris and senior quarterback Joseph Balfour teamed up on a 64-yard touchdown pass play and Balfour threw a 16-yard TD pass to senior tight end Jacob Brooks to help the Bowmen take a 21-0 lead over the Kingsmen before the first quarter came to a close.

In the second quarter, Sherwood got a 4-yard touchdown run by junior fullback Jake Reimer, a 33-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Kevin Larkin to Brooks and a 46-yard scoring run by junior Keegan Lawrence.

Those three touchdowns pushed the Bowmen lead to 42-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Sherwood got a 27-yard touchdown run by Morris, a 10-yard scoring pass from Larkin to senior Logan Ballarche and an 8-yard TD run by junior Tanner Shadbolt to cap off the 63-14 win.

Sherwood, as a team, rushed for 419 yards on 41 carries in the win.

Morris led the balanced Bowmen rushing attack with 62 yards on five carries. Lawrence had 56 yards on four carries, Shadbolt had 53 yards on three carries and junior Brian Lee had 53 yards on six carries.

Balfour completed four of eight pass attempts for 120 yards and Larkin completed all three of his passes for 41 yard. Each quarterback had a pair of touchdown passes.

Brooks had two receptions for 49 yards and a pair of scores.

For the Sherwood defense, Brooks and junior Ryan Jurgens each had a quarterback sack.

Morris intercepted a Putnam pass and Balfour recovered a fumble. Senior Harrison Shelburne blocked a Kingsmen punt.
