Hawks win 2 of 3 at Bend tournament

BEND — Traveling to the central part of the state didn’t seem to slow down the Horizon Christian boys basketball team hardly at all.

The Hawks continued their red-hot start to the season by winning two of their three games at the Les Schwab Holiday Hoopfest, held last Thursday through Saturday at Summit High School.

With the two victories, Horizon Christian upped its season record to 7-1.

The Hawks opened play at the tournament by scoring a 77-61 win over the host team from Summit in a game played last Thursday.

Senior Michael Loomis led the way for Horizon Christian in the victory with 31 points on a 12-for-22 shooting night. He also had a team-high eight rebounds and four assists.

Senior Calvin Anderson added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Connor Marleau and sophomore Trent Pihas each scored 13 points.

Horizon Christian, as a team, shot at a 30-for-50 clip from the field in the victory.

In Friday’s semifinal round, the Hawks suffered their first loss of the season as they fell 66-53 to Newport High School out of Bellevue, Wash.

Loomis had another big night for Horizon, as he scored 29 points on 11-for-17 shooting. Anderson had 12 points and six rebounds. Junior Parker Belan scored seven points.

The Hawks finished their tourney stay Saturday by edging West Albany 60-58.

Loomis scored 33 points in that game, making 11 of 16 shots from the field. Anderson scored 15 points.

The Hawks will be back in action Friday and Saturday when they play in the Crusader New Year’s Invitational, behind held at Salem Academy.

Horizon Christian, which is 2-0 in West Valley League games, will return to WVL play Monday when it travels to Sheridan for a 7:30 p.m. game. On Wednesday, the Hawks will play at Colton at 7:30 p.m.
