Sherwood wrestlers pick it up on the mat

Bowmen wrestle to eighth place at Don York Invitational

PORTLAND — Here come the Bowmen.

The Sherwood High School wrestling team seems to be putting things together as it turned in strong performance at the Don York Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Cleveland High School.

The Bowmen finished in eighth place in the team standings at the 18-school tournament with 162 points.

“Overall, it was the team’s best performance this season,” Sherwood coach William Taylor said. “We didn’t leave any points on the mat. We were happy about that.”

Juniors Nic Clarke and Ryan Jurgens led the way for the Bowmen at the tournament. Clarke finished in second place in the 152-pound weight class and Jurgens was the runner-up at 195 pounds.

Also for the Bowmen, junior Andrew Rice placed third at 170 pounds.

Sherwood freshman Jeffrey Hatfield reached the semifinals in the 120-pound bracket, but he lost his final two bouts by injury default, leaving him in sixth place.

“I think we outpinned every other team in the tournament,” Taylor said.

Sherwood will be back in action tonight (Thursday) when it hosts Wilsonville in a Northwest Oregon Conference dual match. The varsity bouts are set to start at 7 p.m. at Sherwood High School.

On Wednesday, the Bowmen will travel to Milwaukie for a league match starting at 7 p.m. at Milwaukie High School.
