Tigard senior Mark Hall named the event's top wrestler

ST. HELENS — No one topped the Tigers.

The youthful Tigard High School wrestling team stormed to first place in the team standings at the six-school St. Helens Tournament, held Saturday at St. Helens High School.

“It went well,” Tigard coach Geoff Jarman said. “”It was a real successful day for us.”

Senior Mark Hall led the way for Tigard at the event, as he captured the tournament championship in the 152-pound weight class. Hall won three of his four matches by fall and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Tigard junior Alex Anohkin won a tourney championship at 195 pounds. He also had three victories by fall.

Tigard sophomore Kalimen Pabro was second at 132 pounds. Senior Brittian Schneider was the runner-up at 160, sophomore Austin Goodhouse was second at 220 and junior Victor Ceja was second at 285.

Placing third for the Tigers at the tourney were sophomore Brad Williams (106 pounds), sophomore Omar Duran-Vega (113), junior Justin Campbell (152), sophomore Eli Neely (160) and junior Justin Jackson 285).

“This was the first time for a lot of our guys to bring home hardware,” Jarman said.

Prior to the St. Helens Tournament, Tigard competed at the Northwest Duals, held Dec. 28-29 at Tualatin Hills. The Tigers went 3-3 in pool matches at that tournament, and then the Tigers lost their two bracket matches.

“We picked up a ton of experience,” Jarman said.

Hall went 8-0 in his matches at the Northwest Duals and Anohkin went 7-1. Tiger junior Phil Engle also wrestled well at the event.

The Tigers will be back in action tonight (Thursday) when they face McMinnville in a Special District 3 dual match set to start at 7 p.m. at McMinnville High School.
