Lady Bowmen beat Parkrose on late basket

Sherwood moves to 1-2 in league play

PARKROSE — The Sherwood High School girls basketball team must feel like it’s already had its share of heart-breaking losses in Northwest Oregon Conference play.

But, finally, on Tuesday, the Lady Bowmen had one of those close games go their way.

Sherwood, which lost on last-second baskets in league games with Putnam and St. Helens, got a last-second game-winning hoop from junior Jaelyn Funk it its 58-56 victory over Parkrose in a NWOC game played Tuesday at Parkrose High School.

With the victory, the Lady Bowmen improved to 1-2 in NWOC games and to 2-10 on the season. Parkrose fell to 1-2 in league play and to 4-7 on the season.

In Tuesday’s contest, Sherwood held a three-point lead as time was running down. But, with 12 seconds to play, Parkrose senior Jacia Jointer hit a three-point basket from way beyond the arc to tie the contest at 56-56.

But the Lady Bowmen, after calling a time out, got the ball down to Funk on the baseline, and she sank a 10-foot jumper with two seconds left for the winning points.

Funk was Sherwood’s leading scorer in the win with 14 points, including 10 in the first half of the contest.

Senior guard Kyeli Hendryx added 11 points, including eight in the second half. Sophomores Abby Mueller and Jessica Thiel each scored eight points and sophomore Kira Jedan had seven.

Prior to the game at Parkrose, Sherwood fell 49-47 to St. Helens in a league game played Friday at Sherwood High School.

Funk scored 18 points in that game and Hendryx had seven.

The Lady Bowmen will be back in action Friday when they host Sandy in a league game starting at 7:15 p.m.
