Bowmen win big on long road trip

Sherwood moves to 3-0 with 63-9 victory at Hermiston


HERMISTON — The Sherwood High School football team traveled to the eastern side of the state and brought home another big win.

The Bowmen rolled to their third straight impressive victory start the season, as they blasted Hermiston for a 63-9 win in a non-league game played at Hermiston.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 2-1 on the season.

With the win, its 32nd straight in regular season play, Sherwood improved to 3-0 on the season. The Bowmen have also outscored there three opponents by a margin of 179-28.

Sherwood, and senior fullback/linebacker Mickey Schaefer, got off to a roaring start in Friday’s game at Hermiston.

Schaefer scored the first three touchdowns of the game, coming on a 74-yard run, a 26-yard run and a 35-yard interception return, to help the Bowmen claim a 22-7 lead at the end of the opening period.

Sherwood kept rolling from there.

In the second quarter, the Bowmen got touchdown runs of five and six yards by senior Keegan Lawrence, a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker Jake Reimer and a 2-yard touchdown run by senior Nick Dickson, giving Sherwood a 49-7 halftime lead.

In the second half, Sherwood got an 87-yard kickoff return for a score by junior Andrew Ripley-Miles, and a 39-yard touchdown run by sophomore Austin Shadbolt to wrap up the 63-9 win.

As a team, Sherwood rushed for 439 yards on 40 carries in the win. Lawrence led the rushing attack with 154 yards on nine carries..

Schaefer added 132 rushing yards on seven carries in the win at Hermiston. Dickson had a 49-yard reception to go with his touchdown run.

For the Sherwood defense, seniors Jordan Kurahara and Andrew Rice each had a quarterback sack. Junior Austin Tietsort had a fumble recovery and Reimer had a team-high six total tackles to go with his interception.

The Bowmen will be back in action Friday when they host St. Helens in a Northwest Oregon Conference game starting at 7 p.m.

The Lions are 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in NWOC play.
