Hawks run past Amity for victory

Horizon Christian starts WVL play with 32-12 win

TUALATIN — The Horizon Christian High School football team got off to a flying start in West Valley League play.

The Hawks, powering their way to 243 rushing yards, launched their WVL schedule by scoring a 32-12 win over Amity in a league opener played Friday at Horizon Christian.

Amity fell to 1-2 on the season with the setback. Horizon Christian upped its overall record to 1-3 with the victory.

The Hawks got off to a fast start in Friday’s game. Junior Colton Cosner scored on a 2-yard run and junior Michael Weber added a two-point conversion run to give Horizon an 8-0 lead with 2 minutes and 24 seconds left in the first quarter.

Amity answered back with a 51-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Brett Hilt to junior tight end T.R. McShane.

But the Hawks took control from there.

Horizon sophomore quarterback Sandis Chhay scored on a 9-yard run and he added the two-point conversion to give the home team a 16-6 lead with 9:29 left in the second quarter.

Chhay then connected with Weber on a 30-yard touchdown pass play. That TD, and Cosner’s two-point conversion, gave the Hawks a 24-6 advantage with 4:44 left in the first half.

Amity got another TD toss from Hilt late in the half to make the score 24-12 at the intermission.

Horizon Christian scored the only points of the second half, coming on a 2-yard TD run by Weber, and a two-point conversion by Chhay, coming with 6:13 left in the contest, to make the final score 32-12.

Weber led the rushing attack in the win, running for 110 yards on 22 carries. Chhay added 77 rushing yards on 16 carries and senior Daniel Parsons had 32 yards on three carries.

Senior Brian Satterwhite also was key to Horizon’s rushing output. Satterwhite, who started the season at fullback, took over at the center position for the Amity game and helped anchor the offensive line.

Chhay completed five of eight pass attempts for 50 yards. Weber, Parsons and Cosner each had one reception.

Satterwhite helped lead the defense with 10 total tackles, including one for a loss. Cosner had a pair of interceptions and Parsons also had an interception.

Horizon Christian will be back in action Friday when it plays defending league champion Dayton in a game starting at 7 p.m. at Dayton High School. The Pirates are 1-0 in WVL play and 4-0 on the season.
