Tualatin falls just short at Newberg

The Wolves are edged 13-7 in the conference contest

NEWBERG — Mistakes.

In a close, hard-fought football game, they very well could make the difference between victory and defeat.

And, unfortunately for the Tualatin High School football team, it turned out to be Newberg that that made the fewest miscues.

The Timberwolves, plagued by a few untimely mistakes, fell 13-7 to the Tigers in a Pacific Conference football game played Friday at Newberg.

“Newberg did a great job,” Tualatin coach Rob Hastin said. “They didn’t make mistakes. We walked away knowing that we have a lot to improve on.”

With the win, Newberg improved to 1-2 in conference play and to 2-3 on the season. Tualatin moved to 2-1 in conference games, putting the Wolves in a tie with Glencoe for second place, and to 3-2 on the season.

Tualatin, in Friday’s game at Newberg, took a 7-0 lead when senior quarterback Brandon Shroyer completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Nick Hines with 8 minutes and 39 seconds left to play in the first quarter.

Newberg came back to tie the game, at 7-7, when junior quarterback Grayson Oviatt completed a 54-yard scoring pass to junior receiver Tyler DeLashmutt with 11:22 remaining in the second quarter.

The score stayed at 7-7 until the fourth quarter, when the Tigers claimed a 13-7 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Andrew Tautfest coming with 8:54 left in the contest.

Tualatin had two other chances following the Newberg touchdown. But one of the Wolves’ possessions ended with a fourth-down sack and the other with an interception.

“At times, we were the team we wanted to be,” Hastin said. “At other times, we were a team that had a lot to work on.”

For the game, Shroyer completed seven of 17 pass attempts for 72 yards. Senior Nique Reid had three receptions for 28 yard and Hines had two catches for 18 yards.

Senior Ryan Wisner was Tualatin’s leading rusher with 121 yards on 19 carries. Tualatin played the game without junior running back Eli Robinson, who was dealing with a bout of pneumonia.
