Tigard wins to clinch a state playoff berth

The Tigers will open postseason play on Wednesday

TIGARD — It came right down to the last match of the regular season, but the Tigard High School volleyball team can now officially punch its state playoff ticket.

The Tigers earned a berth to the Class 6A state playoffs by scoring a 25-16, 24-26, 25-6, 25-17 win over Forest Grove in a Pacific Conference finale played Tuesday at Tigard High.

“That was huge,” Tigard coach Rob Coelho said. “If we don’t win, we’d have to play Saturday. We’re real excited to be going right into the playoffs.”

With the victory, Tigard finished the regular season with a 9-5 conference record, putting the Tigers in a tie with Glencoe for third place in the final standings.

“Michelle Simmons had another real good game for us,” Coelho said. “Hannah Miller and Lindsey Rosette also played real well. The girls just play better every week.”

The top three teams from the conference (Newberg placed first at 13-1 and McMinnville was second at 11-3) earn automatic bids to the Class 6A state playoffs. Tigard earned the conference’s No. 3 seed into state play by virtue of sweeping the season series against Glencoe, 2-0.

Tigard will open the Class 6A state playoffs Wednesday when it plays in a first-round match against an opponent, and at a site, to be determined.
