by: DAN BROOD - IN THE END ZONE -- Sherwood's Keegan Lawrence gets to the end zone in the Class 5A state title game.SHERWOOD — Keegan Lawrence certainly seemed to have quite a senior football season at Sherwood High School.

Now, Lawrence’s season has been capped off with a big honor — a very big honor.

Lawrence has been named the 2013-2014 Gatorade Oregon Football Player of the Year. He is the Gatorade Oregon Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Sherwood High School.

As a Sherwood senior, Lawrence, a 6-foot, 190-pound running back/defensive back, helped lead the Bowmen to the Class 5A state championship game for the fourth straight year. Sherwood also went 12-1 on the season and won the Northwest Oregon Conference title.

For the season, he rushed for 2,032 yards on 118 carries (a 17.2 yards-per-carry average) with 31 touchdowns. He also had 10 pass receptions for 354 yards and seven more TDs.

Lawrence shared the Northwest Oregon Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors while also earning first-team all-conference honors on defense.

In the Class 5A state championship contest, Lawrence rushed for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 29 carries. He also had a 41-yard TD reception.

He was named Sherwood’s Player of the Game for the title contest.

“I feel that Keegan Lawrence is one of the best players Sherwood has ever had, and, in my opinion, he is the top player in Class 5A in Oregon this year,” Liberty coach Eric Mahlum said. “He wasn’t the biggest, fastest or strongest player we faced this year, but I felt he got more out of his game than any player we faced. He played at a higher level than anyone we played this year.”

Lawrence also has excelled in the classroom, maintaining a 3.76 grade-point average. He also has volunteered locally as a youth football, baseball and basketball coach and on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Other notable Gatorade Oregon Football Players of the Year include Tigard running back/linebacker Jeremy Asher in 1990-1991, Tualatin running back/defensive back Luke Staley in 1998-1999, Grant defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, who now plays for the Detroit Lions, in 2004-2005 and Lake Oswego running back Steven Long in 2011-2012. Long played at Sherwood before moving to Lake Oswego for his senior season.
