Tigard downs the Scots 43-26 for the dual meet win

SALEM — It was a simple equation for the Tigard High wrestling team.

Finish strong, win big.

That’s exactly what the Tigers did.

Tigard, after trailing 20-8 early, won seven of the final eight matches on its way to scoring a 43-26 win over McKay in a Special District 3 dual meet held last Thursday at McKay High School.

McKay fell to 1-7 in Special District 3 matches with the loss while Tigard upped its district mark to 2-6.

Early in last week’s match, Tigard junior Omar Duran-Vega scored a 10-5 decision win over McKay’s Brandon Quazada in the 113-pound match and Tigard junior Jason Alton posted a 17-0 technical fall win over Charbel Flores at 120 pounds.

But, McKay picked up victories in the other four lighter weight matches, giving the Royal Scots their early 12-point lead.

Tigard took over from there.

Junior Joey Stefani got the ball rolling for Tigard by getting an 8-5 decision win over Matthew Jarding at 145 pounds. At 152, Tiger senior Justin Campbell scored an 11-2 major decision win over Benjamin Martinez.

Tigard senior Phil Engel then came through with a major-decision win of his own, as he bested McKay’s Oscar Trevino 14-2 in the 160-pound match. Engel’s win trimmed the McKay lead to 20-19.

The Tigers then jumped into a 25-20 lead when senior Eli Neely pinned McKay’s Karl Emmrich in a time of 1 minute, 11 seconds in the 170-pound match.

Junior Bryan Baker kept things going for Tigard by pinning Cristian Garibay-Ochoa in 1:44 at 182 pounds.

McKay came back to win by fall at 195 pounds, but that would be the last win of the night for the Royal Scots.

Tigard junior Austin Goodhouse needed just 22 seconds to pin David Hernandez in the 220-pound match. Tiger senior Victor Ceja didn’t even need that long to win, as he pinned Kyle Ghormley in 20 seconds in the 285-pound match, capping off Tigard’s 43-26 win.
