White helps lead Timbers to playoffs


The Tigard grad comes on strong for academy team

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - ON THE MOVE -- Tigard's Ben White helped lead the Portland Timbers Academy ages 18-and-under team to the playoffs.Ben White, a 2014 Tigard High School graduate and Gonzaga University men's soccer commit, has been instrumental in leading the Portland Timbers Academy ages U18 team to its first-ever playoff berth.

The Timbers Academy team, with White helping lead the way, earned a spot in the US Soccer Development Academy Playoffs, which start Monday in Westfield, Ind..

The Timbers were buried in the pack earlier in the season, but came on to finish strong, going 5-0-3 over their final eight games, to seize a playoff berth.

White finished as one of the leading scoring outside backs win the nation, finishing the regular season with five goals in 22 starts. In the final eight games, White tallied three goals, including the game-winner against Strikers FC from California as well as the tying goal in a 4-2 Timbers Academy victory over defending national champion Real Salt Lake Academy.

The Timbers Academy team will open the playoffs Monday with a match against the Chicago Fire. On Tuesday, the Portland team will face FC Dallas.
