TIGARD — The Tigard Longhorns OIBA baseball team has already shown a flair for the dramatic early in the summer season.
The Tigard team continued with that trend on June 7, as it rallied from a 5-1 deficit, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and then three more in the bottom of the sixth, to get a 6-5 win over Sherwood in a non-league game played at Tigard High School.
With the victory, the Longhorns improved to 5-3 on the season at that point.
Tigard High School junior-to-be C.J. Rivers picked up the pitching win. He threw the final two innings in relief, giving up no runs on one hit, while striking out three and walking none.
Rivers also went 1 for 3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.
Also for the Longhorns, Ben Barbee went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Fletcher Ahl went 2 for 2. Manny Andrade, Tyler Penn, Sam Pittmon, Ethan Clark and Griffin Williams each scored a run. Clark, Brandt Bridges and Joey Cavelli each had an RBI.
For Sherwood, senior-to-be Takumi Kammerzell went 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Senior-to-be Nic Garrison went 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored. Hayden Gilbert doubled and scored a run.
Tommy Laido, Noah Beeks, Tyler Fix and Lucas Hughes each drove in a run for Sherwood.
Tigard, on Sunday, swept a league doubleheader at Reynolds.
The Longhorns won the first game 11-7. Rivers went 4 for 5 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in that game. Pittmon went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. Sam Gerkman went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs and Penn scored twice.
Lance Kreisberg picked up the pitching win.
Tigard then triumphed 10-0 in the second game.
Rivers got the shutout on the mound, giving up three hits, while striking out 10 and walking one in seven innings of work. He also went 2 for 2 at the plate with three runs scored.
Also for the Longhorns in that game, Ahl, Bobby Carter and Bridges each drove in a pair of runs.
Tigard was scheduled to host McMinnville on Wednesday. Results of that game weren't available when the Times went to press.
The Longhorns will be back in action today (Thursday), when they face Jesuit at 4:30 p.m. at Tigard High School in a first-round game of the Lake Oswego-Tigard tournament. On Friday, the Longhorns will host Lakeridge at 4:30 p.m. in a tournament game, and then they'll be home again on Saturday to face Tualatin at 10 a.m. Tigard will finish tourney play Sunday against an opponent at a site and time to be determined.
On Tuesday, the Longhorns will play at Gladstone in a league game starting at 7 p.m.
Sherwood will be back in action on Saturday, when it faces Southridge in a doubleheader starting at noon at Southridge High School.
On Monday, Sherwood will travel to Newberg for a 5:30 p.m. game. Sherwood will play at McMinnville Tuesday at 5 p.m.
