February is Woodburn Reads Month

The Woodburn School District and the city of Woodburn are encouraging everyone who lives and works in Woodburn to read during the month of February as part of the Woodburn Reads 3 Million Page Challenge.

The challenge, which originated a few years ago, culminates with Read Across America Day, or Dr. Seuss’ birthday, on March 2.

“This special month is unique to Woodburn over the last few years,” said Stu Spence, recreation services manager for the city of Woodburn and one of the event organizers. “Woodburn participants have read more than 10 million pages over the last four years of Woodburn Reads Month. Woodburn Reads builds community-wide literacy awareness and encourages families and business leaders to read.”

The WSD schools compete for a trophy, created by art students at Woodburn Arts and Communications Academy. Heritage Elementary currently has possession of the title, which is determined through a “per student” rate.

Anyone is invited to take part in the challenge by tallying pages read, whether from newspapers, magazines, books or even e-books. To log the number of pages read, visit woodburnsd.org and click the “Woodburn Reads” tab under the Quick Links heading in the middle of the page.
