Aurora creates a 'spooktacle'

by: RAY HUGHEY - At one Aurora home, a skeletal angler wearing a fishing cap made his last cast at, of course, a fish skeleton.Things got a little spooky in Aurora last week with the approach of Halloween.

The Aurora Colony Visitors Association helped things along by sponsoring a Scarecrow Contest, inspiring displays in the commercial area and the residential streets.

Frightful faces peered from shop windows and front yards. Some just hung around — in nooses. Others cooked up mischief in a bubbling caldron.

A fiddle-playing scarecrow perched on a porch roof. Two other pumpkin-headed scarecrows imitated tailgating Ducks fans, complete with a barbecue.

At one home, a skeletal angler wearing a fishing cap made his last cast at, of course, a fish skeleton.

At one Main Street shop, a skeleton in a maid’s uniform sat feet up on a pumpkin with a cup of tea. Passersby might hope her condition was not indicative of the time it took to get served.

But fitting perfectly with the season, all the creatures seemed to be having a horrid time.

By the time the dust and cobwebs cleared Sunday, the judges had spoken and the winners announced.

Residential – First place, “The Headless Horseman of Aurora,” Rhoden-Feely; second place, “Fiddler on the Roof,” Weidman; most original, “One Last Cast,” Sperb; funniest, “Plumbers Crow,” Wilson; and best scene, “Bad to the Bone,” Asher.

Commercial -- First place, White Rabbit, “Charlotte”; second, Pudding Lane, “Worked to Death”; and third place, Wilbur Marmalade, “Shop Dogs.”

The Aurora Colony Visitors Association will post photos and a tour list this week on its website, www.auroracolony.com.by: RAY HUGHEY - A skeleton in a maid's uniform sits feet up on a pumpkin with a cup of tea in this piece titled 'Worked to Death,' which came in second place in the commercial category.by: RAY HUGHEY - Frightful faces peered from shop windows and front yards as part of Aurora's Scarecrow Contest last week.
