by: GEORGE ROBERTS - Members of French Prairie Middle School's student council, which was formed in October for the first time in recent years, cast votes during a recent student council meeting at the school. The student council recently voted to donate $212 raised by the school to AmeriCares' outreach program to victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.French Prairie Middle School has been without a student council for a number of years, so when one was elected in October, students got busy.

Adviser George Roberts, a language arts teacher, has supervised various projects, including a food drive and a coin drive. In one month, the whole school collected 750 pounds of food to donate to AWARE?Food Bank.

“Our leadership class researched and recommended to the student council the names of several charities to whom the funds should be donated,”?Roberts said. “The student council designated that the funds go to AmeriCares because, according to Charity Navigator, 97 percent of donated monies go directly to aid the victims.”
