Gervais boys building one year at a time

by: WOODBURN INDEPENDENT ARCHIVES - Gervais senior Daniel LaFollette will help lead a new crop of seniors for the Cougars this year.Coach: Dan Murray (second year)

Last year: Gervais finished the 2012-13 season on an eight-game streak of losses that culminated in a league playoff loss to Sheridan to end the season. The Cougars finished tied for sixth in the West?Valley Conference with a 3-11 record (6-19 overall).

Key athletes: Daniel LaFollette, Adam Jaramillo

Key losses: Colton Herinckx, Jose Paniagua, Joe Nibler, David Villegas, Anthony Scott, Tony Leiva

First home game: Friday vs. Delphian

Outlook: After years of zero and one-win seasons since joining the West Valley Conference in 2007, the Cougars boys basketball team has been able to build a successful program in recent years. The 2011-12 team finished fourth in league with an 8-6 record (13-11 overall). Although last year’s team took a step back, their final record was still much better than the Cougars’ first five years in the conference. Now it’s up to a senior class led by Daniel LaFollette, Adam Jaramillo, Lazaro Villegas and Jonny Guerrero to continue building toward Gervais’ first playoff run in years.
