Lady Cats looking for first victory of the season

Gervais scores season high in 73-37 loss to Crusaders

by: PHIL HAWKINS - Gervais junior Jelayna Bastidas works inside for two of her eight points in the Lady Cats' 73-37 loss at Salem Academy Thursday night. As the Gervais girls basketball team prepares to wrap up 2013 with a home tournament this weekend, the team is still hungry for its first win of the season.

The Lady Cats are coming off a big 73-37 loss at Salem Academy, but one in which the team scored a season-high after averaging just 19 points a game in its previous three games.

Gervais was unable to keep up with the Crusaders’ high-powered offense that has put up 60 or more points in three straight games.

Salem Academy held a 15-5 advantage after the first quarter and continued to expand their lead throughout the game. Gervais was able to counter in the fourth quarter with 14 points, helping to give the team its best offensive game of the young season.

Freshman Andrea Villegas scored a team-high 12 points, including 2-of-4 shots from 3-point range, while Jelayna Bastidas chipped in eight.

Cassidy Rush added five rebounds, three steals and two assists in the loss.

The Lady Cats (0-5) are hoping to turn their luck around this weekend when the team hosts 2A teams Vernonia, Santiam and Gaston for the Cougar Classic Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Gervais will take on the Santiam Wolverines (6-0), a powerful team out of the Tri-River Conference before playing either Vernonia (7-0) or Gaston (1-4) on Saturday.
