Husky freshman unbeaten at Liberty, Sweet Home

It’s been quite a first month for North Marion wrestler Lane Stigall.

The highlight for the Huskies’ 145-pounder was a title at the Oregon National Guard Invitational tournament Dec. 21 at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.

Stigall and teammate Tyler Saucedo, who placed third, led the Huskies to 11th place overall at the 16-team event with 129.5 points. Sandy (276) won the team championship.

Stigall defeated Tualatin’s Blake Reser by 20-8 major decision in the title bout. That victory followed pins of Forest Grove’s John Rasmessen and Keizer-McNary’s Jordan Cagle, a major decision against Estacada’s Stone Rathbun and a win by fall over Liberty’s Michael Feltman.

Stigall also earned North Marion’s only contested points in a Dec. 17 dual meet at Scappoose, and he went undefeated in four matches the next day during competition at Sweet Home.

In his match at Scappoose, Stigall pinned Cody Erhardt in just 41 seconds to cut the Huskies’ deficit to 16-12.

But Scappoose pulled away after that en route to a 53-12 decision, winning all four of the remaining contested matches and adding 18 points on victories by forfeit at 182, 195 and 285.

North Marion fared better the next day at Sweet Home, defeating Sutherlin 41-33 and topping Stayton 48-30. The team lost to host Sweet Home, 57-15.

Stigall earned first-round pins against Stayton (1:17), Molalla (59 seconds) and Sweet Home (1:36). He also logged a 17-2 victory by technical fall in his match against Sutherlin.

Saucedo (160) also had a standout evening, recording first-round pins against Stayton (56 seconds), Sutherlin (1:29) and Molalla (1:36).

Juan Tarula (138), Damian Chavez (152) and Mario Elias all won by fall against Molalla. Conner Lader (120) and Adam Vega (126) pinned their Sutherlin opponents. Jared Schweighardt posted a victory by fall against Stayton.
