Girls roundup: Woodburn falls at home against McNary Celtics

The Woodburn girls had a two-game win streak snapped Friday at home against the visiting McNary Celtics.

Woodburn entered the game on the heels of a 21-point victory over the McKay Scots on Jan. 7 for the team’s third victory in four games. But the Bulldogs had trouble stopping McNary, giving up their second-most points of the season to an opponent.

It was the second time this season Woodburn was beaten while attempting to string together three straight wins.

The Bulldogs host No. 4 Corvallis Wednesday in the league opener for both teams.

Stayton 26, North Marion 22

North Marion 37, Junction City 17

Kiley Florez missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer as North Marion fell to Stayton Friday night.

After trailing for most of the game, the Huskies pulled ahead 22-21 with under a minute left to play. The host Eagles scored the next four points to take a three-point lead.

With under 10 seconds remaining, Florez dribbled the length of the floor and got off a contest 3-pointer that missed left. The rebound went to Stayton with 0.3 seconds remaining, and the Eagles sank one last free throw to finish the game.

Florez finished with a team-high seven points.

Santiam 51, Kennedy 46

Kennedy 73, Toledo 4

It was an up-and-down week for the Trojans, who ran away with a 69-point victory against the overmatched Toledo Boomers on Jan. 7.

Kennedy finished the week with back-to-back games at Culver and Santiam, culminating in a five-point loss to the No. 1 Wolverines.

The Trojans are currently in third place in the tightly-contested Tri-River Conference, which boasts four of the top 11 teams in the state.

Country Christian 55, St. Paul 42

St. Paul 64, Falls City 25

The Buckaroos halted a three-game losing streak on Jan. 7 against the Falls City Mountaineers before losing to Casco League-leading Country Christian Friday night.

The loss dropped the Bucks into a tie for second in the league standings.

St. Paul plays three games five nights this week, starting with Willamette Valley Christian, Crosshill Christian and then Southwest Christian.
