Flores pinned Blake in the first period and went on to place second in his bracket.Five members of the Gervais wrestling team advanced to the final match at Saturday’s Cougar Classic, helping Gervais place third at their home tournament.

Nikita Kalugin (152 pounds) and Hector Flores (120) each went 3-0 to clinch championships, while teammates Ricardo Flores (106), Ricky Diaz (182) and Roberto Hernandez (285) each picked up second-place honors at the 18-team tournament.

In total, eight different members of the Cougar wrestling team earned points on the day, and 11 of the 14 wrestlers won at least one match at the tournament.

Gervais’ two championship wrestlers, Kalugin and Hector Flores, earned their titles in opposite fashion.

Kalugin was largely untested in his three bouts. The junior wrestler started the tournament with a pin over Nestucca’s Wyatt McKillip in 1:05. He followed with a 14-6 major decision over Chris Whitworth of Knappa in the semifinals. Kalugin was paired against Colton’s Tony Hayes in the finals, and it took him just 25 seconds to put Hayes on his back and pin him to earn the victory.

Hector Flores pinned his first two opponents on his way to the championship match against Creswell’s Skyler Tidwell. The two wrestlers were evenly matched throughout their contest, with neither grappler able to take an advantage and score points.

After the initial three periods were over, Hector Flores and Tidwell were tied at 1-1. The score remained knotted for the first two overtime periods before Hector Flores was able to take down Tidwell for two points and pick up the win.

In the other championship bouts, Diaz pinned his first two opponents in the first and third periods, respectively to earn a trip to the finals against Dayton’s Jarred Montgomery. Diaz fell to Montgomery 7-2 in the finals.

Hernandez’s trip to the finals was much the same. The 285-pound senior took down his first two opponents via pin to earn a match against Ben Baker of Monroe, who pinned Hernandez with 11 seconds remaining in regulation.

In the 106-pound bracket, Ricardo Flores pinned his first opponent before winning his next two matches by decision and major decision, respectively. He fell to Jefferson’s Jacob Sobel by pinfall in the finals.
