Woodburn native helps Whitworth win league title
Kyle Wicks, a former Woodburn resident who attended Willamette Valley Christian School in Salem, helped lead Whitworth Universitys mens swimming team to its 12th consecutive league title Feb. 14-16 at the Northwest Conference championships.
Wicks anchored the Pirates' victorious 200-yard medley relay to a time of 1:32.72. He also swam the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay, helping Whitworth take fourth place with a time of 3:10.61. The sophomore biology major accrued points for the Pirates in three individual events as well. He was fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.77, seventh in the 50 free with a 21.74 and eighth in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:16.42.
Whitworth finished with 730 points, easily outscoring runner-up Whitman (560) to extend the longest streak of swimming championships in the Northwest Conference.
