North Marion boys will face Yamhill-Carlton in play-in round

by: PHIL HAWKINS - North Marion senior Brock Breshears and the rest of the Huskies will travel to Yamhill-Carlton High School Saturday night to take on the Tigers, with a trip to Round 1 of the OSAA playoffs on the line. After wrapping the regular season with a 42-33 loss to Gladstone Tuesday night, the North Marion boys basketball team is set to open postseason play Saturday at Yamhill-Carlton High School.

The Huskies finished the season third in the Tri-Valley Conference standings and ranked 15th after the OSAA polls froze Tuesday night.

North Marion (14-10, 6-4 Tri-Valley Conference) is matched against the Yamhill-Carlton Tigers (13-10, 6-4 Cowapa League), who are ranked lower at No. 17 overall, but will host the Huskies after finishing second in the Cowapa to earn home-court advantage in the play-in round.

The Tigers enter the game having won five of their past six games, with the lone loss coming against No. 8 Tillamook (17-6, 10-0 Cowapa).

Meanwhile, the Huskies are coming off their loss to Gladstone. North Marion swept their season series against Madras, Molalla and Estacada this season, but was in turn swept by La Salle and Gladstone, the second and fourth-ranked teams in the OSAA polls.

The winner of Saturday’s play-in game will advance to Round 1 of the OSAA playoffs, where they will be reseeded with the other play-in winners against the eight teams that earned first-round byes.

As the second-highest ranked play-in team, if the Huskies advance past Yamhill-Carlton, they will face one of the two lowest-ranked bye teams – either No. 11 Cottage Grove or No. 13 Marshfield.
