Huskies fall to La Salle in track duel

Caballero leads North Marion boys with wins in the 100 and both relays

The North Marion track and field team didn’t have the depth to compete against rival La Salle Wednesday in Milwaukie.

The Huskies’ boys team won five events, while the girls took home three victories as North Marion lost 96.5-46.5 on the boys side and 99-29 on the girls side.

The boys’ biggest advantage came in the 400, where Ben Hanberg, Shane Whitehead and Aaron Caballero swept the event. Hanberg finished first with a time of 55.20 to set the pace, followed by fellow senior Whitehead, who clocked in at 58.70.

Caballero was third in 59.13, his first recorded attempt at the event. The sophomore sprinter also placed first in the 100 with a time of 12.06 in a rare tie with La Salle junior Kevin Luyamba.

Caballero went on to join teammates Christian Parr, Austin Dobaj and Drew Torian to win the 4x100 relay in 46.02, a season-best mark for the relay quartet. Caballero and Parr also scored a win in the 4x400 with teammates Hanberg and Dennis Zapata with a finish of 3:41.33 that also clocked in as the best time for the relay team this season.

Freshman Ammon Suchanski picked up the Huskies’ final two victories in the jumps, taking first in the high jump with a height of 5-4 and first in the triple jump at 38-3. Suchanski added a second-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5-4.

The girls team was led by senior Hannah Surcamp, who had one of two individual wins for the Husky girls with a first-place time of 5:42.92 in the 1,500. The win was Surcamp’s second in a row in the event, where she shaved off just more than half a second from her season-best time.

Senior teammate Veronica Norris picked up a win in the high jump with a mark of 4-6. It was her first victory in the event since Norris placed first in McMinnville to open the season with a personal-record jump of 5-2.

North Marion’s final win for the girls came in the 4x100 relay after the Falcons’ team was disqualified. Tia Hunt, Hannah Schweighardt, Marisa Jones and Hannah Waite picked up the win in 52.73, the best mark of the season for the four relay teammates.

The Huskies will travel to Estacada Wednesday to take on the hosting Rangers and the Molalla Indians.
