The Gervais track and field team picked up a pair of victories in the PacWest/Tri-River meet hosted at St. Paul High School on Thursday.
Led by juniors Natali Herinckx and Jonathan Bartolo, who took home top honors in the 800- and 300-meter hurdles, respectively, the Cougars took home a number of strong individual performances in the four-team meet.
Herinckx set a new seasonal best in the 800 to pick up her first victory of the season, finishing on top in 2 minutes, 44.18 seconds to defeat second-place Sarah Diaz-Fregoso of Blanchet Catholic by nearly 7 seconds. The Gervais junior scored another top-three finish in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet to finish third overall.
Junior teammate Ali Cullett also took home a pair of top-three finishes, placing second in the 200 with a time of 33.30 and third in the 100 hurdles with a PR time of 21.23. Freshman Rebekah Hobson finished just behind Cullett in the 200 with a PR time of 33.38.
In the throwing events, Alyssa Ventura led the Cougars with a mark of 75-4.50 in the javelin to place fourth overall.
On the boys side, Bartolo picked up the lone victory for Gervais with a time of 50.04 in the 300 hurdles.
Sophomore Elvis Vallejo added a third-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 4-10, while freshman Dyontae Navarrete added another top-three finish for the Cougars in the 400 with a time of 59.12.
Navarrete went on to set a new PR in the 200 with a time of 25.54 to finish fifth overall in the event.
Gervais is scheduled to travel to East Linn Christian Academy on Thursday for their only event of the week, facing off against league rival Jefferson along with the hosting Eagles and Central Linn.
