PHIL HAWKINS - Gervais junior Alyssa Ventura (left) and Natali Herinckx placed fourth in the javelin and 800, respectively, at the 2017 PacWest Conference track and field championships on Thursday and Friday.
The Gervais track and field team closed out the 2017 season on Friday at the PacWest District Championships, hosted at Scio High School.

Though the Cougars were unable to qualify any athletes to this week's state championship in Eugene, the team came close in several events on the girls' side, led by juniors Alyssa Ventura and Natali Herinckx.

Ventura competed in both the discus and javelin, finishing in fourth in the latter event with a throw of 80-05, her best mark in the event since a personal record throw of 82-09 in March. She added a PR throw of 66-06 in the javelin, finishing 11th in the event.

Herinckx also turned in a fourth-place finish in the 800-meters, missing out on a trip to the state finals by mere seconds. The Gervais junior put up a season-best time of 2:39.11 in the event, but fell just outside of qualifying in a close finish that saw Blanchet's Sarah Diaz-Fregoso earn the second state qualifying spot with a time of 2:37.91.

Herinckx also turned in a ninth-place finish in the long jump (13-08.5) and placed 10th in the discus with a mark of 67-07.

Fellow junior Ali Cullett added a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 21.08, placed 10th in the shot put (19-07) and 11th in the 200 (33.45).

On the boys side, sophomore Elvis Vallejo had the best performance of the two-day event for the Cougars, placing fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-02. Junior Jonathan Bartolo matched his fifth-place finish with one of his own, putting up a PR-time of 46.46 in the 300 hurdles. Bartolo also added a sixth-place finish in the 300 hurdles in 47.95.

Freshman Eduardo Cortes placed ninth in the shot put with a mark of 34-01, while junior Noel Vasquez had the best day out of the Cougar sprinters, placing ninth in the 100 with a time of 12.73.
