The unofficial annual car show season gets underway Saturday with the tradition Portland Transmission Cruise In. Hundreds of collector and specialty cars will be parked on the streets around the longtime transmission shop at 1016 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd. from before 7 a.m. to after 11 a.m. Although a limited number will be judged, most are just brought there for display.
Other notable shows include the series of cruise-ins at Portland International Raceway sponsored by the Beaches restaurant chain. They will be held from 4-9 p.m. every Wednesday from June 7 to Sept. 27.
Most of the shows are free to the public with registration fees going to help charities. Notable ones include Cars for a Cause on May 21 at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion Hotel, which benefits the Autism Society of Oregon, and the Tigard Festival of Cars on June 25 at Cook Park, which benefits Meals on Wheels.
