Electric vehicle push continues

Although electric vehicles are still a small percent of overall auto sales, international developments are pushing manufacturers to increase production and create new vehicles. China is planning to ban fossil fuel powered vehicles in the future, and policymakers in California and Europe are also moving in that direction.

Not coincidentally, General Motors recently announced it will sell two more EV models in the U.S. within 18 month and 20 globally within six years. Ford has formed a new "Team Edison" group to develop new EVs with other companies. And Mazda and Toyota have signed an agreement with the Denso electronic technology company to develop basic structural technologies for new EVs. Toyota already sells both all-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, but Mazda has yet to go electric.

In addition, Mitsubishi has announced it will soon start selling a plug-in hybrid version of its all-new Outlander crossover in America. It will include a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter gas engine, two electric motors, and the company's acclaimed Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel-drive system. The price is expected to start at $34,595.
