David Higgins and Craig Drew claim Oregon Trail Rally victory
David Higgins and Craig Drew of Subaru Rally Team USA won the 2018 Oregon Trail Rally, organized by Oregon Rally Group and sanctioned by the American Rally Association. The three-day event began at Portland International Raceway on Friday, April 20, and ended in Dufur, Oregon on Sunday.
Higgins is an eight-time U.S. national champion in rally racing, and a past winner of the Oregon Trail Rally. This is his 32nd overall rally victory since joining the Subaru factory team in 2011. Higgins and Drew raced in a 2018 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.
"We're happy to get the win, and it's great to be back in the car again," Higgins said. "Today was a proper Sunday drive just trying to manage the gap, but I'm really looking forward to the next rally."
Second place in the rally went to the Seehorn Rally Team from Spokane, with Jeff Seehorn and Karen Jankowski driving their 2015 Subaru Impreza WRX STI to an impressive finish against the manufacturer-backed teams. Seehorn and Jankowski won a class championship in ARA rallying last year, and plan to contend for the championship again this year.
"We're just a privateer team; I built the car myself," Seehorn said after the rally. "We're committed to five out of the seven rallies in the series this year. If we keep going at the rate we're going, we can do it. We get help from Dick Hannah Subaru, Nameless Performance, Maxxis tires, Scrubblade wiper blades, and Fishhead Tuning, and we couldn't do it without them."
Third place went to well-known motorsports personality Ken Block, together with co-driver Alex Gelsomino in their Ford Escort Cosworth. Block was a late entry to the rally, and plans to race in selected ARA rallies this year.
The Oregon Trail Rally is held each year in the spring, and involves point-to-point timed racing over closed gravel and dirt roads in Oregon and southwest Washington. The event traditionally begins with exciting short race stages held on the grounds of Portland International Raceway for easy fan access.
