Mock trial competitors advance to state finals

by: SUBMITTED - Students from Lakeridge and Colton High Schools make their cases during the regional competition. SUBMITTED PHOTOStudents and coaches from six different schools, including West Linn High School, convened at the Clackamas County Courthouse on March 2 for the annual Classroom Law Project High School Mock Trial Regional Competition.

The competition — which saw WLHS’ “Gold” team advance to the state competition scheduled for this weekend — centered around the fictitious case “State of Oregon v. Durden,” which considered whether a student’s death by drinking too much water could be criminal.

During the course of three rounds, teams were slotted as either the prosecutors or the defendants. A group of volunteer judges including local attorneys and community members made its ruling once the three rounds had been completed.

Competing alongside WLHS were teams from Lake Oswego High School, Alliance Charter Academy, Colton High School, Lakeridge High School and Sandy High School.
