School's Parent Teacher Student Association earned $15,000 from last year's sale

The annual event is a PTSA fundraiser, with all proceeds going to support Athey Creek’s students and teachers in the upcoming 2013-14 school year.

One of three middle schools in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District, Athey Creek draws students primarily from Stafford and Willamette primary schools.

With more than 600 students, the school community comprises about 400 families, and the garage sale has drawn support from a majority of them.

“The level of community support has been incredible,” event coordinator Kathy DeSpain said. “Our team of parent volunteers has been nearly overwhelmed by the ongoing donations streaming in week after week.”

This fundraiser is Athey Creek PTSA’s primary source of income for the school year; the first garage sale, held in 2012, raised $15,000 over two days. The PTSA used that money to fund an outdoor play structure, purchase iPads that teachers and students can use on-campus, provide grants to support the art and band programs at Athey Creek, give each teacher funds for miscellaneous classroom needs and grant teachers’ requests for specific classroom support.

Money raised through the 2013 garage sale fundraiser will be used to provide similar support to the school community in the 2013-14 school year.

DeSpain said this year’s fundraiser is shaping up to be as big as — or even bigger — than last year’s inaugural event.

“We will have unbelievable amount of quality items available, all presented at bargain prices,” DeSpain said. “Whatever you need, from brand-name clothing for your family or household items like dishes and linens to fun stuff like toys, sports equipment, electronics, holiday decor — you will find it at this garage sale.”

The items for sale will fill two of the larger rooms at the school — the gymnasium and the commons.

Food will be available for purchase, too, including coffee and pastries in the morning and hot dogs, chips and drinks in the afternoon.

Athey Creek Middle School is located at 2900 SW Borland Road, just off Interstate 205 near the intersection of Stafford and Borland roads.
