A time-honored tradition

May Court celebration is in full swing this week at West Linn High School

A long-standing tradition continues this week at West Linn High School. For nearly a century, members of the May Court have presided over the school’s annual May Day celebration.

This year, 20 princes and princesses have been learning and practicing for months. Their efforts will be on display Friday at the high school when the May Day performance and festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. The court will perform two dances, a waltz to “A Thousand Years” and a fast dance to “Runaway Baby.”

We asked each member of the May Court to tell us about themselves and their May Court experience. Below are their answers.

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

The best part of May Court rehearsals is definitely the people there. I look forward to May Court practices every week because I always have a good time.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

My favorite May Court memory is when we finally finished learning the waltz. It was so pretty to watch everyone around you looking like actual princes and princesses.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

It allows a group of people to get to know one another better. I had never really gotten to know some of the people on the court before. May Court teaches responsibility and work ethic. Who knew learning how to waltz could be such hard work?

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

My favorite part about the May Court rehearsals was probably spending time with new people that I didn’t know as well and getting to know them better. They’re all really nice.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

Learning how to waltz the first night of practice. It was funny to watch how everyone did it, and I was bad at it too, at first.

What makes May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

This May Court tradition is important to West Linn High because it brings a lot of different people together on the court and lets them get to know each other and to spend time with one another. It also provides a way to break the boundaries of different social groups that may have separated us before the court. This helps our senior class to become more united as a whole and end the year as one senior class instead of a separated and broken one.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

May Court is a special tradition at West Linn because it’s been going on for almost 100 years and it’s a great honor that even gets passed on from family members.

Prince Connor Cushman

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

Definitely the intense bouts of basketball in between rehearsals of the dance.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

I think my favorite memories are yet to come. Doing the dance and the ceremonies in front of a crowd will be pretty special.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

It brings the school together for one day of just celebrating us not as a school but as people, and that’s something we don’t get to do a lot. Plus, it’s a sweet half day.

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

The best part of rehearsals is how much fun we all have. We work really well together as a group, so dancing has been a blast. The second dance that we learned has been especially fun because we were actually able to choreograph parts of it on our own rather than Jessica Middleton Murray choreographing the entire thing. I’ve never been much of a dancer, so this has been a great way for me to try out something new.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

My favorite memory would have to be something that happened at practice on April 21. We had just finished learning the end of our second dance, meaning that we were done learning choreography, when one of the boys, Drew Crowther, decides to shoot a basketball from about half court. He shot it through his legs backward, bounced it off the ground and made it. We were all so happy to have the choreography done, and that shot put our happiness over the edge.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

Many people think that May Court is just a popularity contest that West Linn High School puts on, but it is not. Because members are elected not only through popular vote but also through grades and community service, among other things, the court is assembled from a diverse group of students. It’s just a very cool opportunity to honor those at West Linn who have done great things throughout high school, and it doesn’t just showcase the people that everyone votes for.

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

Everyone has so much fun together. We laugh and joke around. Princess Emmalee Scheid always brings a sweet treat, like brownies or cookies, and after every rehearsal we go out to Baskin-Robbins.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

One time, Prince Drew Crowther made a half court shot backward and through his legs. It was hilarious, because nobody expected it to make it. It was an epic way to end the rehearsal.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

The court goes to a local elementary school and helps teach young boys and girls that being a prince or princess is not just about looking the part, it’s also about your character and the way you treat others. Not only does that teach those kids about character but it helps solidify those ideas in us. Helping teach those kids is what makes the May Court important.

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

The best part about May Court rehearsals is how we all goof around and have fun together. My partner, Joel, and I weren’t really friends before but now we talk about everything. We’ve all become good friends and after practice we always go to Baskin-Robbins to relax and have fun together.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

The day we found out we all made court and stayed after school for a meeting. The court is filled with such wonderful, positive people. We were all smiling and congratulating each other. That meeting really set the tone for the rest of our practices. Everyone is supportive and encouraging of one another and I think that’s really important to make for an enjoyable court experience. Not everyone has a ton of dance experience, so it’s very easy to become self-conscious when trying to learn and practice a new move, but because of the fun environment we initially created we can all laugh at ourselves and help one another.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

May Court has been around for a long time. It’s something that you see as a freshman and are just awed by — at least I was. I knew I wanted to be on the court my freshman year when I first saw the waltz at May Day and wanted to do that. It’s something I’ve looked forward to since then, and I think many other girls have as well. It’s also an important tradition because it’s been around for so long. Mothers, fathers and sometimes even grandmothers or grandfathers have been on the court, so it’s great for family legacies as well.

Princess Leah Henningsen

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

We are all a large family, and it is so much fun getting the chance to spend time with everyone during rehearsals. Princess Emmalee always brings a new dessert recipe to practice every week. Each new recipe she makes is the best.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

Getting the opportunity to read royalty-themed books to students at Sunset Primary was such a rewarding experience. The students were all so enthusiastic and engaged in the lesson. Students also got the chance to make their own crowns while learning the most important lesson of all: That no matter what, anyone can be a prince or princess.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

May Court is a tradition that builds and celebrates a connection between the high school and the community of West Linn. It is a tradition that also allows people to gain perspective on the history of both the school and the city. I believe that it also inspires people to honor their own community.

Prince Brett Kruger

What is the best part of May Court rehearsals?

For me, the best part has been getting to know everyone in the group a lot better. Before practice, we would see each other in the hallways but we all had different friend groups. Now when we see each other in the hallways, we are all connected.

What is your favorite May Court memory?

I really enjoyed the “reading with royalty,” when we went to Sunset Primary School and I had the opportunity to read books to third-graders as well as kindergarteners. They all had so much energy and were so happy to see us. We read them books about princes and princesses, helped them decorate paper crowns and afterward a group of people from the court went out to breakfast at Shari’s.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?

I think May Court is an important tradition at West Linn High School because it is something that has been passed down from generation to generation. I think the tradition is also important because a lot of guys and girls did May Pole their freshman year and remember watching the May Court, and now we have the opportunity to be the court who is looked up to by many.

What makes the May Court an important West Linn High School tradition?
