Pre-football barbecue draws support from local businesses

West Linn High School’s Parent Pride Organization sponsored a back-to-school barbecue Sept. 20. Held just before the football game against South Salem, the event drew great support from the SUBMITTED PHOTO - Parent volunteers are ready to serve hungry students and their families at the WLHS back-to-school barbecue on Sept. 20.

The barbecue is not a fundraiser. Organizer Shamera Daugherty said the goal was just to break even. She reported donations of cash and food items from Costco, Safeway, Walmart, Albertson’s and Crown Q Market in Portland. Reser’s Fine Foods donated macaroni salad and the Willamette General Store provided pulled pork for sandwiches at a discount. Jeff and Kristin Hoffman donated tabletop flower arrangements.

The threat of rain forced the party indoors, where about 125 attendees fit comfortably. Daugherty said the parents’ organization already was discussing ways to improve the event and attract more attendees. WLHS parents who are interested in learning more or becoming involved can call Daugherty at 503-539-6677 or email her at This email address is being protected from spambots.
