About 140 Sunset kids and family members attended the evening event, visiting 15 different stations to learn exercises they can do at home with no equipment, to explore different aspects of nutrition and absorb the 5-2-1-0 daily guidelines — meaning five fruits and veggies, two hours max of screen-time, one hour of exercise and zero sugary drinks. Attendees also had the chance to practice hands-only CPR.

“All of our stations were facilitated by community leaders such as (a) pediatrician, nurse, CPR-certified instructors, fitness and wellness experts and teachers,” event chairwoman Betsy Maust said. “All of our healthy snacks were donated by local businesses.”

Sunset’s physical education and wellness instructor Tammy Ellis was on hand for the evening.

“This event is important because if we can educate parents along with students we can have a healthy community,” she said. “Also, for students to watch parents be involved, that’s a good role model.”

Students received plenty of take-home advice and treats as well as an ongoing plan for healthy living.

“The kids now start a 30-day challenge to practice what they learned at home — one step forward for healthy kids, healthy families and healthy hearts,” Maust said.
