Show support for music and arts in schools

With the start of the school year just around the corner, now is the perfect time to renew your membership in West Linn-Wilsonville’s Music and Arts Partners (MAP). If you sign up or renew during MAP’s early-bird membership campaign, you will be eligible to win two season tickets to West Linn or Wilsonville 2014-15 drama productions in a drawing to be held in mid-September.

Memberships are the driving force of MAP fundraising. Revenue from memberships helps to fund grant requests from music and arts teachers for various items and projectct, including:

Artist in residence for drama and musical theatre productions, primary music programs and visual arts.

Instrument purchases and repairs.

Music scores and equipment.

Support for the middle school musical support.

Bolton kids offered back-to-school haircuts

Once again, GiGi Aveda Hair Salon in West Linn is offering free back-to-school haircuts to Bolton kids on Aug. 26th from 3 to 8 p.m. Call for an appointment and let the salon know you are signing up for their Bolton haircut offer. Appointments will be scheduled until they are all filled. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Prepare for back to school at Willamette

School secretaries returned to work at Willamette Primary School on Aug. 12, and they are now available to help new families with enrollment paperwork. Letters about class placement will be sent out Aug. 22, and families are invited to meet their 2014-15 classroom teachers on Aug. 28 at 2:30 p.m.

The school’s annual ice cream social will be held Sept. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Rosemont Ridge names new assistant principal

Rosemont Ridge will have a new assistant principal when school starts up again next month. Greg Mylet has worked with middle school students for 24 years, most recently at Lake Oswego Junior High, where he has worked for the past 19 years. Myet also has been leading STEM partnership activities in Lake Oswego schools.

Principal Debi Briggs-Crispin invites the Rosemont community to meet Myet Aug. 28 between 4 and 6 p.m. Classes resume at Rosemont after Labor Day, with Sept. 2 being the first day for sixth-graders and Sept. 3 for seventh- and eight-graders.

Rosemont’s annual back-to-school barbeque will be held Sept. 5.

Register for music classes at YMP

Fall registration is now underway for classes at Youth Music Project. Located at 2015 Eighth Ave. in West Linn, YMP offers group and private lessons to kids at any experience lesson. Classes include acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, electric bass, fiddle, piano, ukulele, vocal performance and art.

Group classes begin the week of Oct. 6 and the registration deadline is Sept. 22. Register online at Tuition is $96 for eight weekly sessions. Financial assistance is available to students who qualify for free and reduced meals through the school district.

WL-WV wins accounting award

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded the West Linn-Wilsonville School District the Certificate of Achievment for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 21st consecutive year. The certificate recognizes excellence in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and it represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. The WL-WV business office earned the award by presenting a clear and understandable financial statement for the benefit of the public reader.

Attend SunGarden open house

Looking for a preschool? SunGarden Montessori has scheduled two open house and school tour events. Interested families can visit Aug. 17 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Mark calendar for Stafford back-to-school events

Stafford Primary School is already planning a strong start to the 2014-15 school year. If you have students at Stafford, plan on attending these events.

Meet your teacher, Aug. 28, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Students entering all grades are invited to meet teachers and staff — and to enjoy a popsicle and meet other students and parents. Stafford’s new instructional coordinator, Phil Anderson, also will be on hand to meet children and their parents.

First day of school supply drop off, Sept. 2, 7:50 to 8:20 a.m. Students will see their classroom for the first time, meet their teacher again and connect with classmates. Teachers will have areas for dropping off supplies, and parents are welcome to stay until teachers are ready to start the school day.

Java with Jen, Sept. 2, 8:20 to 9:20 a.m. Parents are invited to stop by the multipurpose room for coffee and treats with Principal Jen Freeborn and the PTSA executive committee.

The annual Stafford Stampede is scheduled for Sept. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m.

LO Rotary Club names Bigelow Scholarship winner

The Rotary Club of Lake Oswego has awarded this year’s Robert Bigelow Memorial Scholarship to Madison Cameron, a 2014 graduate of Lake Oswego High School. The scholarship honorsRobert Bigelow, a former president of the Rotary Club of Lake Oswego, and the former publisher of the Lake Oswego Review and West Linn Tidings.

Each year, the Scholarship is awarded to a Lake Oswego or West Linn student who has been active in the community and is enrolled in the School of Journalism & Communication at the University of Oregon.

This year’s winner has been a volunteer for the past four years at Happy Trails Riding Center, a therapy center for children and adults with disabilities. She plans to earn her bachelor of arts degree in advertising with a minor either in business or entrepreneurship.
