Summer solstice features pirates, parrots, swashbucklers and scalawags
Farmers market kicks off Wednesday
Historic Willamette: A Main Street Community kicks off West Linn's 2012 Wednesday farmers market with swashbuckling buccaneers, swaggering parrots, local musical talent, high-stepping merry men, Game Shire, a sidewalk sale and the first day of summer bounty during its pirate-themed summer solstice celebration featuring The Portland Pirates on Wednesday.
Master of ceremonies and historic conjurer Danny Schreiber will start festivities with a magic show at 5 p.m. followed by the introduction of a group of singers - many fresh from performing in "Pirates of Penzance" - from Stagecoach Theater Arts of Lake Oswego. Time After Time, a local barbershop quartet that is part of the award-winning Salem Senate Aires chorus, will also perform before 6 p.m. and will stroll the street during the evening.
At 6 p.m., for the first time ever, BilgeRats and Pyrettes, the official band of the Portland Pirate Festival managed by Margot Productions, will launch musical mayhem in West Linn with songs of the high seas.
The pirates will yield the stage to the Bridgetown Morris Men. Their bells, banners and dances to welcome fruitful summer harvests were a hit last year, especially when the group retired to B.J.Willy's for an impromptu sing-along after the celebration.
Throughout the night, Dragon Theater puppets will perform, and aspiring young swashbucklers can storm the castle at Game Shire, sponsored by Play2Grow Developmental Therapy. Activities include pirate-themed safe sword play and a walk the plank balance game.
Historic Willamette: A Main Street Community is located along Willamette Falls Drive. It comprises neighbors and merchants dedicated to preserving the ambience of West Linn's historic district.
Farmers market manager Miles McCoy promises an abundant summer every Wednesday through Sept. 19.
The market has many returning vendors supplying berries and all of the seasonal fruits. The food court is also expanding with a fresh grilled sandwich spot and a noodles vendor, with almost everyone back from last year.
The market is located at the corner of 13th Avenue and Willamette Falls Drive. For more information about the farmers market, call 971-207-0267.
