Watch their garden grow

Robinwood community garden grows by leaps and bounds

by: SUBMITTED - The Robinwood community pulled together this spring by creating a garden with 22 garden beds. Thanks to a Clackamas County Healthy Eating, Active Living grant for $7,660, some residents in the Robinwood neighborhood were honing their green thumbs this summer.

Their new community garden is located on the property surrounding Robinwood Station, 3706 Cedaroak Drive. The retired fire station now serves as a community center for the neighborhood.

This spring volunteers constructed raised garden beds, including 18 regular beds, two wheelchair-accessible beds and two larger and longer beds. Other native plants and edible vegetation can also be found on the property.

The city of West Linn is letting the neighbors use the land and assisted in irrigation setup and supplied wood chips. Volunteers from Confluence Environmental Center, Lewis and Clark College and West Linn High School also helped construct the garden.

“The garden is flourishing now and has turned into a much larger project than expected,” garden organizer Lisa Clifton said. She is also the sustainable multifamily community project coordinator for Clackamas County.

Clifton said at least six different groups of neighbors have told her they come by the garden all of the time to get ideas for their own gardens, and countless people have commented how wonderful the garden is and how great it is to see people spending time there.

However, she also said the Friends of Robinwood Station have not been as successful as they hoped at attracting members from the multifamily communities in the area. There are two families from apartments or town homes who participated in the garden.

The garden is the result of more than 1,000 volunteer hours and plant and material donations from neighbors.

This year, more than 400 pounds of food was grown with 50 pounds donated to the West Linn Food Pantry. The garden currently has 17 garden members and has held six classes.
