Stop smoking with cessation classes

Based on the American Lung Association's Freedom From Smoking program, Providence Health & Services smoking cessation classes are designed to help you quit smoking for good.

Participants will learn a systematic approach to quitting through behavior modification techniques, coping skills, social support and information on weight management, stress management and the role of medication.

The cessation casses are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 30 through Feb. 27 at Providence Willamette Falls Community Center, 519 15th St., Oregon City.

UNITY Center launches Season of Peace

In conjunction with numerous spiritual communities worldwide, The UNITY Center in West Linn will celebrate the 16th Season for Peace and Nonviolence during the 64 days between the anniversaries of the deaths of Mahatma Gandhi (Jan. 30) and Martin Luther King Jr. (April 4).

Launched in 1998, and each subsequent year, at the United Nations, this international event honors the shared vision of Gandhi and King to heal, transform and empower communities by creating an increased awareness of their nonviolent principles and practices.

The UNITY Center will kick off the season Jan. 27, with services, classes and events centered on the themes of peace and nonviolence throughout the months of February and March.

February events include:

Six-week book study series featuring “Gandhi the Man” by Eknath Eaawaran begins Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.

“For the Next Seven Generations,” a documentary film about the world vision of 13 indigenous grandmothers from across the globe will be shown at The UNITY Center Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. $5 suggested donation.

Arun Gandhi, “Lessons I Learned From My grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi,” an in-person presentation by Gandhi’s grandson at St. Anne’s Chapel, Marylhurst University, is set for Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and proceeds to go to the school Gandhi is funding in rural India.

Tax forms may be late this year

Following the January tax law changes made by Congress under the American Taxpayer Relief Act, the IRS has announced that it plans to open the 2013 filing season and begin processing individual income tax returns Jan. 30. Many tax forms and booklets will be late in arriving this year.

Visit the West Linn Public Library site at westlinnoregon.gov/library/tax-forms-library to see what forms it currently has in stock. Once they have been published, you can also access all IRS forms and instruction booklets on the IRS website.

The Oregon Department of Revenue no longer sends state tax booklets to any libraries. You can download state tax forms from the Department of Revenue website or call 1-800-356-4222. (Please note that there is no short form this year.)

Need help filing your return? The AARP Tax-Aide program offers free assistance in preparing basic tax returns. Visit aarp.org/applications/VMISLocator/searchTaxAideLocations.action to find the nearest Tax-Aide site.

This year's tax deadline is April 15.

Sausage and kraut feed set

The West Linn Lions Club will hold its 40th annual sausage and sauerkraut feed Feb. 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Parish Hall, 21060 SW Stafford Road, Tualatin.

The cost is $12 for ages 9 and older and free for those 8 and younger. Proceeds will benefit local charities. Tickets are available at the door or from West Linn Lions Club members.

There will be live entertainment featuring the Oregon Polkabeats.

Providence offers free mammograms

Uninsured Clackamas County women between the ages of 40 and 64 years of age who have not had a screening mammogram in the last year may be eligible for a free mammogram offered by Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center.

Screening are set for 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 5. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All applicants must meet financial criteria. To determine eligibility and to schedule an appointment, call 503-557-2100.

Library is giving away 2010 magazines

The West Linn Public Library is giving away all 2010 magazines to make way for new 2013 issues.

All 2010 red-banded magazines will be discarded by the library to make room for the 2013 issues. Anyone interested in taking some are welcome to do so.

Bring the magazines to the front check-out desk and staff will check to make sure they are the correct year for discarding.

The library is located at 1595 Burns St.

Check out winter weather routes

The city of West Linn will post winter weather information on its home page and on its Facebook page and Twitter when necessary.  

The winter weather route map shows primary and secondary snow plowing, de-icing routes and streets subject to closure during snowy and icy weather in West Linn.

Please note that primary snow and ice routes include major and minor streets, with the focus on facilitating access to local arterials. Other collector and neighborhood streets are the secondary focus, and will be addressed after primary routes are cleared.

Apply for the Old Time Fair Court

Applications for the 2013 West Linn Old Time Fair Court are currently being accepted from any eighth-grade girl residing within the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.

Public, private and home-school students are encouraged to apply. Application packets are available at West Linn City Hall at the Parks and Recreation Department or online at westlinnoregon.gov/parksrec.

The deadline to return completed applications is Friday at 5 p.m. Selection interviews will take place Feb. 20 at the McLean House at 6 p.m.
