Pioneer, businessman, politician, visionary — these are some of the terms used to describe Moore, the founder of the long-gone community of Linn City.

According to McIntyre, Moore helped make Oregon what it is today.

“Here was a man who took chances, made investments in time and money, changed history, served his country in war and yet is relegated to a few lines in most history books,” McIntyre said.

Moore came to the Oregon Country in 1840 as part of a group known as the Peoria Party that helped open up the Northwest. A participant in the vote for an independent government at Champoeg, he knew and mixed with others to help form what was to be the Oregon Provisional Government.

He helped develop industry and transportation around the Willamette Falls area. His shipping and warehousing operation once rivaled and exceeded that of any in Oregon City, according to McIntyre. He worked with people such as Dr. John McLoughlin, the Rev. Jason Lee and George Abernethy.

Moore was a family man, the father of 10 children and, through his family, had an impact on Oregon that continues today through Pacific University.

“His religious beliefs and, in some cases, his social skills made him an outsider,” McIntyre said. “He was a business partner to many and very resistant to giving up the water power he obtained when he purchased the west bank of the Willamette Falls. He purchased the Oregon Spectator and then gave it away.”

The free event will be March 10 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the West Linn Adult Community Center, 1180 Rosemont Road.
