West Linn resident files for county commission seat

Justin Gombos filed Dec. 12 for the 2014 election

West Linn resident Justin Gombos filed Dec. 12 to become the third challenger for Clackamas County Commissioner Jim Bernard’s seat in the 2014 election.

Gombos, a graduate of the University of Oregon who is currently enrolled in a master’s program at Willamette University, joins Milwaukie Mayor Jeremy Ferguson and Boring Community Planning Organization Chair Stephen Bates on the ticket next to Bernard.

Bernard, of Wilsonville, has served on the county commission since 2009.

Gombos filed under the “nonpartisan” party affiliation. He currently works as a commodities broker and previously worked as an associate producer at KEZI news before serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy from July 2002 to January 2013.

Before graduating from the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism, Gombos spent two years at Georgetown University studying economics. He earned his high school diploma at West Linn High School, where he played football.

Gombos’ campaign website, gombos2014.org, is not yet running. When reached for comment, Gombos said he is still in the early stages of the campaign process.

“I’m still putting a committee together,” Gombos said. “In terms of fundraising, there’s some T’s I need to cross.”

The deadline to file for the May 20 primary election is March 11. Candidates may withdraw until March 14.
