West Linn Lions set to host Bowl-A-Thon

Wilsonville event will benefit Sight and Hearing Foundation

Residents in search of a bowling outing can look forward to March 16, as the West Linn Lions and West Linn Riverview Lions clubs co-host the 19th annual Sight and Hearing Bowl-A-Thon at Wilsonville Lanes in Wilsonville.

The event is part of an effort to raise money for the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation (OLSHF). As such, the cost for each four-person team is $100, a package that includes a T-shirt and gift bag. Participants, who must be at least 18-years old, will also have a chance to win cash prizes depending on their performance.

Participants also have the option of lane sponsorship, which costs $80. Sponsors will have their individual or company name listed on a flier and hung over the lanes during the event.

“So many different teams come together to support the program,” said Tom Loun, a West Linn Lion club member who will emcee the event. “People from all over the state, the coast and Southwest Washington (participate). There’s good comradery and you see people renewing friendships.”

The Bowl-A-Thon is comprised of three sessions — at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. — and each will support up to 22 teams.

“We can max out at 264 bowlers,” Loun said. “And we’re maxed out almost every year.”

Loun said as of Feb. 21, 34 teams had registered. The event can support as many as 66 teams.

The games are “9-pin, no tap,” meaning striking down nine out of 10 pins on the first try still counts as a strike.

“We’ve had some people score 300,” Loun said, “There were two last year when I was there.”In the 18 years since the Lions started the Bowl-A-Thon, they have raised $116,121 for OLSHF. In 2013 — a down year according to Loun — the club raised $5,000 for the foundation.

OLSHF was founded in 1959 as the “charitable arm” of the Lions Club of Oregon, with the goal of “improving the quality of life in the area of sight, hearing, diabetes and humanitarian service for people in Oregon.”
