Take Rosemont Ridge’s West Linn transportation survey

The city is getting ready to update its long-range transportation plan and the Rosemont Ridge Middle School PTO is looking for input from citizens.

West Linn is required to maintain a 25-year plan that aligns necessary transportation investments with expected population and employment changes over that timeframe. The region expects to house more than 1 million new residents by 2040 and expects to have significantly less transportation revenue for new projects and maintenance over that same time.

How the city accommodates all of these new residents with limited money for new transportation improvements and maintenance will be a central theme of the upcoming discussions. One way to do this is to encourage more pedestrian and bicycle activity, and that means improving safety and convenience for walkers, bikers and school-aged children.

PTO members would like to know what you think about the existing transportation system and where West Linn should focus its investment over the next 25 years. This survey is an extension of the city’s effort to engage more citizens in the transportation system plan update.

Free paper shredding event scheduled

Join the West Linn Sustainability Advisory Board for a free on-site shred event to help recycle documents while protecting your identity and the environment.

The community shred event and recycle day is set for April 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at West Linn City Hall, 22500 Salamo Road. The first two banker size boxes are free; each additional box carries a $5 charge.

This event is fast and easy. Drive through and drop off your boxes.

The event also includes free e-waste drop off for home computers, televisions, laptops and other electronics.

The West Linn Lions will be collecting eyeglasses, hearing aids and cellphones.

Ace Computer Repair will wipe computer hard drives for $10 each.

Great Outdoor Adventure set to return

to Mary S. Young State Park this summer

The Great Outdoor Adventure will be offered again in 2014, the West Linn Parks and Recreation Department announced.

This outdoor and nature-based community overnight camp will be held at Mary S. Young State Park Aug. 16-17.

The event is designed to provide local families the opportunity to camp and learn about the outdoors right in West Linn.

In 2013 the event included a campsite, outdoor and nature education opportunities, interactive activities, a movie on the big screen, a camp fire, night hikes, contests and a light breakfast on Sunday.

In 2014, the city is looking to expand both the outdoor activities and educational opportunities.

Apply for community grants

The city of West Linn has a limited amount of funding available for community organizations’ requests for support for their yearly events, operations and activities.

Community organizations are asked to submit a standardized application form so all requests received by the city can be similarly evaluated during the community grant allocation process for fiscal year 2015 (for events/programs held between July 1 and June 30, 2015).

The biennial budget includes an allocation to qualifying organizations.

Submitted application forms will be evaluated by the citizen members of the citizens’ budget committee and grant allocation recommendations will be forwarded to the West Linn City Council for approval at a June city council meeting.

LOT conducts water treatment plant tours

The first monthly public tour of construction activities at the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Treatment Plant took place Jan. 23.

Tour participants were able to view construction from the existing filter decks, learn about the different activities occurring and ask questions from project staff.

Tours are held monthly on the fourth Thursday, starting at 10 a.m. and lasting 30 minutes. The next tour is scheduled for March 27.

Because the tour is located within an active construction zone, visitors will be required to wear sturdy, close-toed shoes. Hard hats and safety vests will be provided.

Historic resources rehabilitation grant available

Funds are still available for the 2013 round of the rehabilitation grant program for restoration, rehabilitation or repair of historic buildings.

To qualify for the grant, the building must be an eligible contributing building in the National Register Willamette Falls Neighborhood Historic District or listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places. Projects must be on the exterior of the building, but cannot be new construction or an addition. All projects must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

There is a limited amount of available funding and it will be distributed based on the degree to which the work meets the following priorities:

  • First priority: Restores integrity to the architectural style by removing incompatible features, alterations or additions, and restores missing or altered historic features on elevations visible from the public right of way.
  • Second priority: Removes incompatible features or restores missing or altered historic features on elevations not visible from the public right of way.
  • Third priority: Repairs or replaces in-kind deteriorated historic features that are visible from the public right of way or projects that preserve the integrity, safety and stability of elevations of the building not visible from the right of way.
  • Grant applications are available in the planning department at West Linn City Hall or online. Applications must be submitted by March 24 and will be reviewed by the Historic Review Board in April. The grants are limited to a maximum of $2,000 and require a 50 percent match.     Master Recycler course registration opens

    The regional Master Recycler course is making its annual visit to Clackamas County this spring. The course provides an opportunity to learn about recycling and thoughtful consumption — and then use that knowledge to make a difference in the community.

    The eight-week class, offered only three times a year in the Portland region, meets once a week in the evening and twice on Saturdays for half-day field trips. The spring 2014 session begins April 2 and runs for eight consecutive Wednesdays at the Clackamas County Development Services Building, 150 Beavercreek Road, Oregon City. There are two Saturday field trips. Registration is now open.

    Volunteer at Maddax Woods

    Maddax Woods needs help to fight back against English ivy and other non-native invasive plants.

    You can volunteer to help save the trees, native plants and animals in the nature parks. Every third Saturday of each month there are park restoration events. All individuals, families and groups are invited.

    Volunteers meet at 9 a.m. at the Maddax Woods parking area located at 5785 River St. in West Linn. The event hours are from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring sturdy shoes and gloves.

    Volunteers meet every Monday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Mary S. Young State Park, 19900 Willamette Drive.

    Volunteer at the library

    Many of the hundreds of items the West Linn Public Library checks in and shelves each day are handled by volunteers.

    The library is currently looking for people age 14 and older who can make a regular commitment to shelve library materials, keep shelves organized and participate in occasional special projects.
