West Linn Public Library in the Old Time Fair Parade

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the West Linn Public Library, and the Old Time Fair committee named us the Grand Marshals of this year’s parade!

Not only are we excited to participate as Marshals, but we are once again pumped up to march in the parade with our patrons. Last year we dressed up as robots to fit the parade’s theme and to demonstrate that the library honors the past, while looking toward the future. This year’s theme is, well, us. So how are we going to lead the parade? One word: steampunk.

The parade’s official theme is “All Aboard the Reading Railroad” and our summer reading theme is science, and we thought that steampunk was the ideal way to merge the two concepts into a cool and crazy parade theme. For those of you that are not familiar with steampunk, it is sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. You most often see it represented by an alternate Victorian setting, or a more-mechanized Wild West. In fact, the Will Smith movie “Wild Wild West” shows an excellent example of steampunk fashion and themes.

If you are interested in marching in the parade with the West Linn Library, call 503-656-7853, extension 4 to sign up. The library will be providing everyone who participates with vintage-looking steampunk goggles, but we can’t wait to see what kind of costumes you create!

To get some ideas, check out our “Steampunk Costumes” Pinterest board at: www.pinterest.com/westlinnlibrary/steampunk-costumes/. (Note: a common piece in steampunk costumes is a detailed and stylized revolver. Please leave out the weapons when you create your costume).

If you still haven’t signed up for Summer Reading yet, there’s plenty of time! Kids, teens, and adults are all welcome to sign up and read their hearts out! This year, we are also reading as a community. Join us for the 75,000 Minute Reading Challenge! The West Linn Public Library is pleased to support PAWS Animal Shelter in West Linn during the Summer Reading Program. Summer readers are challenged to read more than 75,000 minutes. When they do, local businesses will pledge their support to PAWS. It’s a win-win — our summer readers read more minutes, and our local businesses make a connection with PAWS.

We have a number of events this summer for all ages. To sign up for Summer Reading or to see our calendar of events, visit westlinnlibrary.org.

See you at the parade!
