Young's Jewelers offers master's touch
Sandy Young had this comment to make about Dean Young's skill as a goldsmith: 'He's good.'
In fact, Dean Young, her husband, is very good, a fact he and Sandy are now proving at Young's Jewelers at 22240 Salamo Road in West Linn.
Dean Young is an engaging and enthusiastic fellow, and Sandy Young has a big, warm smile. They feel good about their first venture into the jewelry store business because their store offers something unique.
For one thing Dean Young's workshop is right in the view of customers, and they can watch him in action as he designs and redesigns jewelry.
'Dean is old school,' Sandy Young said. 'He uses no molds; he uses no casting. He does everything by hand. He actually rolls out the metal.'
'I do one-of-a-kind pieces,' Dean Young said. 'Thirty percent of the pieces on sale here are my unique designs.'
Dean Young also does redesigning, making heirloom pieces look modern.
Although he has been in the United States for 20 years, Dean Young's London accent is still undiluted, and it is in that great city where he received his training as a master goldsmith.
Even people with an untrained eye for jewelry can see that his work is beautiful - not just his magnificent 'Ring of the Universe,' which he has entered in jewelry competition events, but also the jewelry on display in his cases.
The Youngs have worked hard for the past three months on redesigning their space in the Cascade Summit Shopping Center, which previously housed a wine shop.
'Everything was purple,' Dean Young said.
'It was fun,' Sandy Young said. 'But it didn't work for us.'
Dean and Sandy Young are looking to make an impact on the jewelry scene in West Linn.
'We'll give it our best,' Dean Young promised.
Young's Jewelers will celebrate its opening with a ribbon cutting tonight at 5:45 p.m. It will offer networking, refreshments and prizes. Those attending are advised to bring plenty of business cards for this West Linn Chamber of Commerce event.
