Library’s Summer Reading Program to end with prize drawing

On Sunday at 3 p.m., the West Linn Library will host its grand prize drawing for Summer Reading Program participants.

For the first time, top readers certificates will be handed out for each age group: kids, teens and adults.

Top readers in each of the three age groups will be awarded prizes, and participants in the kids program have a chance to win number of grand prizes including Portland Trail Blazers tickets, gift cards, a stuffed animal and a party with Presto the Magician.

As of Aug. 21, the library had tallied 625,555 total minutes of reading since June 13, when the Summer Reading Program started. According to Library Director Holly Mercer, that was more than nine times the number of minutes counted last year.

McLean House set to host Art and Garden Gala

The Friends of the McLean House and Park are holding an Art and Garden Gala on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 5350 River St.

This annual fundraiser will feature local artists and nurseries.

There will be ceramics, photography, native plants, jewelry, garden art, textiles and glass art for sale. Participants will also enjoy music, Master Gardeners, children’s activities and raffles.

Living History Tour tickets available

Tickets are now on sale for the 2014 Willamette Living History Tour. The tour date is Sept. 20.

On the tour, costumed guides will lead you through the historic neighborhood of Willamette and into some of the homes and lives of the first citizens living there. Guests will walk into the past of one of the first suburban towns from the early 20th century.

Music in the Park comes to an end

The 2014 Music in the Park program ends tonight, with one last show by the Red Light Romeos.

Photo challenge deadline approaching

Amateur photographers of any age (with parental permission), are invited to share their best original photos taken at any West Linn Parks and Recreation facility, event, camp, program or class.

Submit up to twelve of your favorite Parks and Recreation photos by 5 p.m. Sept. 2.

Categories include Recreation Programs, Sports, and Classes; Trails; Wildlife and Nature and City of West Linn Events.

Three winners will be selected per category, with 13 prizes awarded in total. Winners are scheduled to be announced on September 12, 2014 on the Parks and Recreation web site and contacted by mail that week. Prizes will be presented at a reception on Friday, September 12, 2014 at the West Linn Adult Community Center, from 5:00 - 6:30 pm. Additionally, all winning photographs will be displayed on the Parks and Recreation web site and as part of a traveling exhibition at the various City facilities. All winning photographers will receive an award certificate in addition to the following prizes:

Grand Prize (Chosen from any of the four contest categories):

$250 cash, $100 Parks and Recreation gift certificate, and

The Grand Prize winning photo will be framed and displayed in the Parks and Recreation office at City Hall for one year.

  • First, second and third Prizes will also be awarded in all four contest categories.
  • First Prize- $100 cash and $75 Parks and Recreation gift certificate
  • Second Prize- $50 cash and $50 Parks and Recreation gift certificate
  • Third Prize- $25 cash and $25 Parks and Recreation gift certificate
  • Photos should be high resolution and represent how Parks and Recreation enhances the experience of living in West Linn through “safe, attractive, and well maintained parks, facilities, trails, open spaces, as well as, creative and challenging recreation programs.”

    All photos submitted have the possibility of being used in Parks and Recreation publications and promotions, along with photographer acknowledgement when feasible.
